LUKOVO

LUKOVO, a village in the Velebit Channel, 21 km south of Senj. There are sev-eral shallow coves south of Lukovo, which gradually end in small shallow indents (Vlaska, Anzina). Only the Zdralova Bay can provide shelter for smaller vessels from the sirocco and the bora but it is exposed to often very unpleasant north-westerly winds. There is also the Biluca Bay in the south, which represents a good shelter for smaller vessels from any wind. Chief occupations are livestock breeding and fishing. Situated near the main road (M2, E65), connected with it by a branch of the local road. On the location of an earlier settlement, the Bunjevci (a Croatian ethnic group) founded Lukovo in the 18th century, named after the church of St. Luke from the 1772; the present church was erected in 1842.
